Facebook is launching ‘Watch’ which is a new platform for shows on Facebook.
It will be available on mobile, desktop and laptop and across TV apps.

All you will have to do is click a ‘Watch’ tab on Facebook to gain access from your social media feed.
The Watch tab will first be rolled out to people in the US, being made available to a wider group of Facebook users in the coming weeks.
The shows on Watch will be episodes that could be live or recorded, some of which Facebook will pay for.
You can create a ‘Watchlist’ which is a list of your favourite shows that you follow so you can catch up on missed episodes.
Facebook created Watch as they want people to have a dedicated place where they can go to watch videos.

This comes in direct competition with the function of YouTube as a platform, as well as internet streaming providers Netflix and Amazon.
Disney have also said they are taking away all their content currently available on Netflix, and launching their own streaming service
Watch will be a personalised platform, that means Facebook will look at what you respond to and what your friends are watching and suggest shows to you based on that.
You will be able to see the comments on the show as you watch it, as they feel that ‘people’s comments and reactions to the video are often as much a part of the experience as the video itself.’

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook said: ‘Watching a show doesn’t have to be passive.
‘It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things.’
The billionaire tech entrepreneur said that some of the shows will be made by ‘professional creators’.
Watch is the first time Facebook have acknowledged the fact that people who create and publish these shows need to make money.
Facebook Watch is a platform for these creators and publishers to reach an audience.

Facebook have said that shows on Watch can be successful if:

  • They engage fans and community,
  • they are live shows that connect directly with fans,
  • they are shows that follow a narrative arc or have a consistent theme,
  • they are live events that bring communities together.
